The Master Gardener program provides in depth horticultural training to individuals throughout Missouri who then volunteer their time applying what they have learned to help others in their communities to learn about gardening and environmental education. To become trained as a Master Gardener, an individual must attend a 30 hour classroom Core Course training. Then the Master Gardener trainee is required to give 30 hours of volunteer service back to their community in approved University of Missouri Extension activities.

A Matter of Balance is an award winning program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls. This program is taught by University of Missouri Extension Specialists and consists of eight, two-hour sessions. The sessions help participants learn how to view falls and the fear of falling as something controllable. There will also be information on how to set realistic goals for increasing activity, as well as how to change their environment to reduce fall risk factors. In general the program promotes exercise to increase strength and balance to help reduce the risk of falls in older adults.

Description:
Missouri’s Stay Strong, Stay Healthy (SSSH) program is designed to increase aging adults’ access to a safe, structured, and effective strength training program. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy- Level 2 is a follow-up to Level 1. It is for those who want to challenge themselves a bit more! Over the 8 weeks, participants learn exercises to improve their strength, flexibility and balance. At each session, a prescribed set of eight to 10 upper and lower body strengthening exercises are done along with warm-up and cool-down stretches. In order to enroll in the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy–Level 2 program, you must have completed the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy-Level 1 program at least twice. Participants are made to feel comfortable and encouraged to gradually build the strength beneficial to health. All equipment is provided.

4-H Interstate Exchange program is a two-year life skills development program for 4-H members age 13 and older. Franklin County 4-H teens and adult volunteers involved in the program work to find a partner county in another state. One year of the effort is planning a trip to the partner county where Franklin County teens and adult advisors will spend a week living with 4-H families in the partner county. The other year of the program the Franklin County teens and adult advisors host the members from the partner county in their homes. They arrange group activities that include touring area sites, and having family time with the visiting delegates.
