History of Missouri Capitols coverMarian M. Ohman
Department of Community Development

From the petition for statehood to the drawing competition for today's state capitol in 1912, this book talks about our historical capitols as well as Missouri history.

Anyone who likes history or architecture will find interest in this book. Many photos and drawings of former capitols, as well as the sketches submitted in designing the current capitol, are included. Prices, materials, approval and construction of each capitol is covered in-depth.

Placing the current capitol was not easy. In fact, after finding today's location, the commission began another search for a more suitable site. Eventually settling on today's location, the next decision was to name it. Popular opinion, including that of Senator Thomas Hart Benton, was that "Missouriopolis" sounded good, and even appeared on the first few maps until the name "City of Jefferson" was adopted in 1822.
