About the artist
Columbia artist Mariel Stephenson, who graciously is sharing her work for the spring catalog cover and also her time to teach Experiments in Watercolor, was born in England and came to live in the United States as a child. She attended Bennington College as an undergraduate and earned a master's degree in art from MU.
Stephenson taught at a private school on New York's Long Island for 24 years before moving back to Columbia to help care for her mother. After earning a second bachelor's degree and teaching certification from Columbia College, she resumed her teaching career in the Columbia Schools from 1992 to 2001.
Stephenson is active in the Green Belt Land Trust and the Columbia Audubon Society, serving on the latter's board, and took a leadership role in efforts to designate Rock Quarry Road as a scenic route.
"View From the Hill" started as an effort to capture the sunset's effect on the landscape over Columbia, later evolving into a more intimate, moody and ambiguous vista. "On a visit to the Columbia Cemetery, the view surprisingly reappeared and gave me the title for the painting," she says.
